What is the Newcomer Information Centre (NIC)?
NIC is free resource centre where you can get connected to the services that will assist you successfully settle in Ottawa. There is a library of printed pamphlets and fact sheets that you can take. Access to computers and the Internet is provided. Our knowledgeable and multilingual staff will help you find the information and services you’re looking for. You can use NIC services independently or with assistance from the staff, and return as often as you wish.
Do I need to book an appointment for NIC?
Yes. You need to book an appointment to access our information session and referral with our specialists as well access to our computer resources. To register with our program, you can complete online registration form, call us at 613-788-5001 or send us an email via nic@ymcaywca.ca
Is it free to use NIC?
Yes. Access to our resources, services and staff is free of charge.
Can NIC help me learn English or French?
Yes. NIC staff can refer you to the Y's Language Assessment and Referral Centre (LARC). You may be eligible to access the LINC Program (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) or CLIC program (cours de langue pour les immigrants au Canada) which provides free English and French language classes to assist newcomers to successfully settle in Canada.
How can I meet other people in my community?
Using NIC is a great way to meet new people and get connected. We can tell you about activities, events and gathering places in the community. Come to the information sessions we host here, and meet fellow newcomers to Canada.
